Our First Response

Pleased to report that last night we have received the first response to our letters to cabinet members on the future of school food in Richmond and Kingston.

Last night Cllr Serge Lourie, Leader of Richmond Council, responded by saying:

"I am delighted with the progress being made by the Council's School Meals Working Party in preparation for the next contract due September 2011.

As a former caterer, I am convinced that it is important for young people to have proper nutrition through fresh raw materials that do not clock up too many food miles.  Ultimately this is a matter for the governors, but I am personally convinced that they should follow the ethos of "School Food Matters" and provide food that is fresh and nutritious."

Cllr Lourie agreed the service that the borough offers through its school meal contract for primary schools should also reflect the ethos of SFM.  This way schools that prefer to join the borough contract can enjoy the same fresh sustainable food as schools that opt out.

Cllr Lourie stated that LB Richmond is happy to provide leadership on this important issue.

SFM is keen to hear the views of Richmond's Conservative councillors and also to hear from both parties in Kingston.
