What's for lunch ... in Kingston

Having just launched the SFM Kingston petition to parents, I thought I would visit a school using the borough school meal service operated by Cygnet.

Today's offer was ham & pineapple pizza with new potatoes or baked potato with a chicken slice and vegetarian option was quorn pasta bolognaise with new potatoes.  Vegetable of the day was salad (lettuce and tomato) and for pudding apple crumble and custard.

As many schools in Kingston don't have kitchen facilities, the Cygnet service is an 'off site' service.  The main meal and dessert is prepared at a production unit in Nottingham, blast chilled and then delivered overnight to the hub kitchen in Surbiton.  It is then 'cooked off' sent in hot boxes to schools to be served at lunch time.  Vegetables, fruit, salad and dairy are delivered direct to the Surbiton kitchen.

The food was served by cheerful dinner ladies led by a qualified cook.  Sadly, without kitchens, these ladies get little opportunity to use their skills.

It is brilliant that Kingston LA continues to offer a hot meal service when they are severely limited by lack of kitchen facilities.  The demand from parents is there, so let's work together to continue to improve the service.

It would be great to get some feedback from parents and children so that we can work with the LA to shape the future of school food in this borough.
